Kilns sprang up along the main bands and outcrops of limestone near Kendal, Penrith and the Coniston Limestone band. There are remains of hundreds of lime kilns both large and small around Cumbria [See list]. Typically the kiln was set into the side of a shallow hill, so that carts could deliver limestone and firewood to the top.

Workers at Tata Steel’s limestone quarry and lime kiln operation in Cumbria face an anxious wait after the company revealed plans to cut as many as 3,000 jobs across its European business. Tata Steel said the plans were in response to what it described as a “severe” international steel market but insisted there would be no plant closures.
The central volcanic mass of Cumbria is surrounded on most sides by outcrops of limestone. Most of these areas have been used for the production of lime, and it is in these areas that the lime kilns can be found. The majority of these are small farm kilns which were used intermittently to produce sufficient lime for the farmer’s own needs.

Just outside the village of Gleaston, and about a mile and ahalf from Gleaston Castle, this lime kiln, in pretty good condition, still stands in the fields overlooking the B road to the village. The farmer has obviously converted the kiln for farm use, but apart from the obvious changes, it's in excellent condition.
